The Ledge is undoubtedly the most unique climbing facility in the world, not just because of the scope of its amenities and top quality instruction, but because it is a registered charity dedicated to inspiring positive social change via the medium of climbing.
It all happened rather quickly, after Sport Scotland in 2015 approved Mountaineering Scotland’s National Facilities Plan, identifying the need for a major indoor climbing facility in the North of Scotland. I seized on the opportunity, and The Ledge Charity was formed in June 2017, aiming to build and operate The Ledge Climbing Gym in Inverness as a force for good in the area’s communities.
The plan was to fundraise to build an awesome climbing centre, that would go on to use its operational surplus to fulfil our charitable ambitions to bring about social improvement and help for at-risk youth and other vulnerable groups.
In 2021, helped by funding from Sport Scotland, HIE, the Highland Council and many others, we eventually found a suitable building and The Ledge was constructed in Inverness.
Our talented, committed and enthusiastic team at The Ledge focus on the facility’s climbing and fitness activities to foster a therapeutic learning environment – with a series of classes, courses and mentored projects – that simultaneously guides people towards more positive outcomes in all walks of life.
We call this “vertical living” – using climbing, activity, movement and green/blue space work as a tool to help people reach higher ground.
